How to Get Better Clients (with a Special Offer for My Blog Readers)

My son had just started school and I desperately wanted to be successful as a freelancer. So of course, I did what I thought was the logical answer: I took every client who would hire me. I worked for content mills, low payers, and wrote about any and all subjects. But instead of making my goal income, I worked all the time, made very little money and was unhappy.

After a few years of this (and my husband hinting about me getting a full-time job), I tried a more strategic approach. I began actively marketing myself to clients who were likely to hire me. I started focusing on a few niches so my articles took less time to write. I landed several anchor clients so that work was coming to me steadily instead of me spending unpaid marketing time constantly pitching. My income doubled. I worked less. And everyone (including my husband) was happier.

It wasn’t that I needed more clients or even just higher paying clients (although that definitely was part of it). I needed better clients. But finding the perfect client is not a one size fits all answer. The perfect client for me is different from your perfect client, because we have different areas of expertise, work styles, strengths, interests and personalities. And looking for better clients is not an easy thing to do.

So last month when Ed Gandia approached me about sharing his “Get Better Clients Academy” with you, I was very interested. I totally agree with his approach and I know that finding better clients solves the majority of a freelancer’s business problems. As you know, I rarely recommend or promote products and I only share promotions that I personally believe in, so I had to check out the program myself before I could agree to blog about it. Also, I am getting no money or kickbacks from this promotion. I’m just sharing because I think it is something many readers would find helpful—and it’s a great deal right now.

Why I Like the Get Better Clients Academy

After spending some time looking through the 22 practical execution plans included in the academy and hanging out in the private Facebook page for Academy members, I was very impressed. The program is based on a six-step Get Better Clients roadmap and teaches very practical tools and tips for each step. His tips are very similar to the ones I recommend on my blog, but instead of just telling you to create a marketing plan like I do, Ed gives you a tool to help you actually plan 12 months of marketing.

My favorite part is that it’s personalized. You take an assessment when you sign up to see which step you should start on. Even more importantly, all of the tips and advice are aimed at helping you find the best clients FOR YOU and allows you to customize it to your specific business.

Special Promotion for My Blog Readers

Ed has generously offered my blog readers a special promotion to show you how much he believes that the information in the Academy will help you grow your business. By using this link to sign up for the Get Better Clients Academy, you can purchase a 15-day pass to the Academy for $9. During the trial, you have full access to all of the materials and information. Nothing is blocked or limited for the trial period.

The best part is that, after the trial period, you do not have to cancel anything if you do not want to continue because there are no automatic or recurring charges. Instead, you have to actively sign up again if you want to continue. As someone who finally figured out how to cancel a makeup club that I accidentally subscribed to through a free offer and ended up costing me a hundreds of dollars, I really appreciate this approach. And if you do sign up for additional months at $34 per month, you can cancel any time.

I also want to highly recommend listening to Ed Gandia’s High-Income Business Writing Podcast. He has very interesting guests that provide practical advice. It’s one of my favorite podcasts and I have gotten a ton of new ideas for running my business from listening the past year.

If you want to access the Get Better Clients Academy for 15 days for only $9, sign up here.

It is wonderful how two people who genuinely care about the freelance community work so well together. I respect both Jennifer’s and Ed’s advice. Both have propelled my freelance writing career forward.

Thanks for your kind words, Johnny!

Hi Jennifer, how long is the link active? I ask because I’d love to take advantage of this offer but I know I won’t be able to even look at the information until next week and I don’t want to waste the 15 days. Thanks so much!

Hi Paula, thanks for your interest! The offer will be available through the end of next week. I don’t think Jennifer is sending a reminder, though. So you might want to make a note to give it a try once your schedule clears a bit. Thanks! 😉

Thanks for the heads up, Jennifer. I have always found Ed’s advice to be solid gold. He’s walked the walk, so everything he shares has been ‘road tested.’ And like you, he is very generous with his time and knowledge.

    Will definitely look into this….

      Thank you, Lori!

I just signed up for this course today and I think it’s amazing. Having done a few writing courses in my career, I can vouch that’s it an extremely well-designed, well thought-out and informative course. Similar courses can be purchased online for $500, making the $9 trial fee for this course a complete bargain. I love how the modules are set up in a clear and logical order and you can download all the materials during the trial period. I think this is one of the best online courses available today about how to get off your duff and start marketing yourself and finding better clients. (No, I’m not getting paid to write this!)

Wow, thank you, Kate! Glad you decide to give it a try and that you’ve found it useful so far.

Yes, I totally agree with the comment above! I don’t often rave to others about freelance biz training programs but I feel like I should say this: I just signed up and am overwhelmed with the amount of super useful resources and how very well organized all the worksheets and videos are. I am learning a TON of practical info and tips that I can already implement into my freelance work/client relations this week–and this is just from finishing the orientation videos and only half of the first execution plan. First freelance business training program that has gotten me excited to learn in a long time–and first program that I am actually getting something out of. Worth so much more than this trial offer fee.

You just made my weekend, SR! It’s so great to hear that, thank you! Glad to know you’re already getting value from the Academy. Thanks for giving it a whirl! 🙂
