My 5 Favorite Blog Posts from 2014

With round up lists of 2014 dominating the media the next two weeks, I thought I would jump on the bandwagon. I’m also feeling a little lazy and didn’t want to write a new post. Not to mention the fact that I have 34 people coming to my house for dinner tomorrow night for our annual Taco Christmas party.  So I thought I would share my favorite posts from 2014 this week in case you missed them.

1. How to Get the Best Content Marketing Pay Rate: By Word, By Hour, Or By Project – I wanted to repost this one since this is one of most common questions I hear from writers. I think many of us find it confusing to switch from the days of per word rates at consumer pubs to the various pay structures of content marketing writing.

2. Should You Put Your Content Marketing Writing Rates on Your Website – I loved the lively discussion that started in the comments section on the pros and cons. Some great points were brought up on both sides that I had never thought of.

3. It’s Not All About the Money: What Writing About Turkeys Taught Me About Freelance Writing – No matter how many national by-lines I get, I am positive that my “turkey” moment will be my greatest career accomplishment.

4. Should You Write a Test Article for Free? – This situation keeps coming up for me and other writers. The discussion in the comments reminded me that it really is a situation by situation decision. I wish that this issue had gone away and all companies realized how demeaning it is, but I don’t see that happening any time soon.

5. The Importance of Having a Niche: Or How I Realized that I am Not a Fish Writer – Writers (and people in general) don’t’ often share their mistakes publically. I was really nervous about posting then, but I found it very freeing to write this post and found it reassuring to read in the comments that many of you had done the same thing.

What topics would you like to see me write about in 2015? Any questions that you have that you would like me to answer on the blog?
