Why Freelance Writers Should Consider Content Marketing Writing

I always assumed that my worth as a freelance writer would be measured by the number of articles that I could place in the glossy magazines found on the checkout racks at the grocery store. But with many traditional publications moving to online versions exclusively or shutting their doors completely, it is almost impossible for a writer these days to earn a living wage by only writing for consumer magazines.

Although on the surface these changes seem negative to writers, the advent of social media and our increasingly digital world has brought a new opportunity for writers – content marketing writing. Earlier this week, I talked about exactly what content marketing writing is and what types of deliverables content marketing writers create.

So what does this mean to writers?

Content Marketing is a great opportunity for writers to expand their income, expertise and client base, especially in the B2B space. According to Content Marketing Institute’s B2B Enterprise Content Marketing: 2013 Benchmarks, Budget, and Trends — North America, 52 percent of B2B companies are planning on increasing their content marketing budget this year. Writers who have the skills necessary to be successful with consumer and trade publications, such as interviewing, understanding the audience and ability to write for the specific audience, will easily find their skills are transferable to content marketing.
