Finding B2B Content Marketing Clients for Any Niche

B2B content marketing is a great source of income for freelance writers and one that many writers don’t fully tap into. B2B stands for business-to-business, which means companies that are marketing their products to other companies. Most writers who have niches outside of business and technology assume that they don’t have expertise that would work in B2B. But they are wrong. The majority of niches have plenty of B2B markets for you to target.

Here is how to find those markets:

1. If you didn’t go through the process I explained on Monday for finding brands in your niche, take some time to brainstorm ideas using my five step strategy. Once you are finished, start with the list that you came up with of businesses that provide products or services for your niche.

Using the example I talked about on Monday for gardening, let’s use with garden centers as an example. But you can also do the same for any of the gardening businesses I mentioned in the step 4 of the example.

2. Think about what businesses provide products and services to the business and make a list of each type of business. Every business in every niche has vendors that they use to keep their business running, either those who perform tasks or provide products. And each of those businesses has a need for content to help build trust in the businesses that they are trying to sell to. Since you understand the industry, you are in a unique position to help the vendor create the content.

Continuing with the gardening example, here are just some of the things that gardening centers need – irrigation system, software to track the plants/shipments, racks to put the plants on both inside and out, carts to carry the plants around, lots of pots to put the plants in, special growing lights, fertilizer, soil, and training for their employees. While I can keep a houseplant alive, I’m not a gardening expert so I assume that there are many other products and services that gardening centers need.

3. Now go through each of the types of products/services that you came up with and make a list of specific brands providing each one. Spend some time on Google looking for brands. Get a copy of a trade publication for your industry and look at the advertisements to see which products are marketing to the businesses. For the gardening example, I would find a trade publication geared towards people who run gardening centers spend some time writing down advertisers. I would also go visit my local gardening store and ask them about what types of vendors they use to get more ideas.

Once you have a solid list of different B2B brands in your industry, modify your LOI for each brand and to include any B2B writing experience as well.
