3 New Content Marketing Vocabulary Words: SEO, SME, and Influencer

A few weeks ago, I published a cheat sheet for content marketing vocabulary since many writers transitioning from traditional journalism find themselves scrambling to learn the new lingo of content marketing.

Here are three new words of the day:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – You most likely have heard this term if you have been doing online writing, but I wanted to include it for those writers moving from newspapers or print publications. SEO refers to key words included in your content that increase the blog, article or whitepapers ranking in search engine results. In recent years, many content companies and businesses began using keywords for the sole purpose of increasing SEO. However, recent changes in the Google algorithm have eliminated SEO overloading and now require companies to create SEO in a more organic fashion.

SME (Subject Matter Expert) – You will most likely hear this term if you work with a technology client, although other industries may use it as well. An SME is a person who is an expert on a particular topic, such as cloud computing. If you are writing on that topic, you will typically interview the SME either over the phone or in person to get the information that you need. SMEs usually possess a world of knowledge on a topic, but often speak in technical jargon that is over the readers’ heads. Your job is to translate the SME’s language into terminology and content that your reader will understand.

Influencer – This is a term that I just heard for the first time in the past few months. An influencer is a person who is well respected in the particular industry and whose ideas are often cutting edge in the industry. Influencers are often asked to write thought leadership pieces, such as through a blog or column, while other influencers are used as sources by content marketing writers. You may also be asked to ghostwrite for a influencer.
