Why I Started the Content Marketing Writer Blog

I didn’t plan to become a content marketing writer. Two years ago, I applied for a job ad and found myself on several content marketing projects. When I started I couldn’t explain what content marketing was. But over the last two years, I have learned a lot the hard way about content marketing, how to write content marketing material, and how to market content marketing writing as a service to businesses.

At the end of 2012, I added up all of my income from the year and realized that content marketing writing had made up over half of what I earned during the year. So, if I hadn’t branched into content marketing writing, I would have earned 50 percent less last year. When I was at ASJA in April, I attended several sessions on content marketing and realized that it was an area that a lot of writers had questions about. I talked to several writers who thought content marketing was the same as content mills (it’s not) and others who really wanted to get started but weren’t sure where to start.

When I got home from my wonderful weekend in NYC, I decided to launch this blog for writers transitioning from traditional writing to including content marketing in their services. It seems that each day content marketing takes a new twist or gains more momentum. From my experience and all of the buzz, I am positive that this isn’t a trend that is going away anytime soon. But as often is the case when you are freelancing for a living, blogging for myself often fell to the bottom of the to-do list. So I decided to join the 2013 Word Count Blogathon to get the blog up and going. If you are new to the blog, I welcome you and look forward to getting to know you.

If you are new to blog and curious about content marketing, check out these two posts :

I’m working on my list of topics for the next 28 days and want to get input from you. What are some questions that you have about content marketing writing?
